A merchandiser focuses on the condition and availability of products in store. A promoter focuses on conversations with shoppers. Both support retail execution, but their daily tasks, schedules and measures should follow the job they are there to do.
The merchandiser works on the shelf
Typical tasks include checking listed SKUs, replenishing from available stock where permitted, arranging facings, checking price labels and recording display or expiry issues. A merchandiser may visit several outlets on an agreed route. The useful output is evidence of shelf conditions, completed corrections and problems that require action from the brand, retailer or distributor.
The promoter works with the shopper
A promoter explains approved product information, answers questions and supports demonstrations or sampling within the campaign brief. The role may require a continuous shift at one outlet during selected shopping hours. Briefing should cover product knowledge, permitted claims, interaction standards, sample handling where relevant, and who to contact when a question cannot be answered.
Choose measures that match the role
For merchandising, examine SKU availability, completed store tasks and unresolved exceptions. For promotion, consider attendance, relevant interactions, samples distributed and sales that can actually be recorded under the agreed method. Do not treat sample distribution as a sale or assume that a promoter can fix an upstream stock shortage.
When both roles belong in a campaign
A product launch can need both a stocked, correctly labelled display and someone to explain the product. Plan the shelf check before the promotional shift where practical, then agree who handles replenishment during the activity. Otherwise the promoter may leave shoppers waiting while looking for stock, or a display problem may go unnoticed.
Specify the work before requesting people
Describe the outlet, shift or visit frequency, product range, expected shopper activity and required evidence. If one person is expected to perform both roles, check that the time and store access make that realistic. Compare OSAM merchandising and promoter scopes separately before deciding on a combined brief.
